Call for Participants (Free improvisational Ensembles)

IRiMaS (Interactive Research in Music as Sound)is a five-year project funded by the European Research Council. It is based at the University of Huddersfield, England and led by Professor Michael Clarke. It is investigating the potential of interactive software to enhance research into music going beyond what can be researched or communicated purely by text or notation. The ‘Tracking the Creative Process in Free Improvisation’ Case Study is part of this project. The ways in which improvisations evolve through the interaction of musicians is being studied along with the contribution that interactive software can make to such research. A central part of the Case Study involves recording (audio and video) musicians rehearsing and performing so that the creative process can be examined both aurally and visually.

As a part of this research, PhD candidate Maria Donohue is looking for free improvising ensembles to create archival documentations of. Participants will be documented in a variety of ways depending on availability and the scope of their interest in being involved. Documentation will include high quality video, audio, interview and psychophysiological measurements. The psychophysiological measurements include skin conductivity and heart rate variability sensors, which are non-invasive or constricting towards performance.  All documentation will be available to the ensemble for personal use, and all documentation will be passed by you before presenting your work to the public. The results from these analysis will be shared in conferences around the world, referenced in a book documenting the project, as well as made available in the ultimate developed software for continued musicological study. The IRiMaS team would greatly appreciate your participation, If you have an ensemble that may be interested in being involveded in this research, please fill out the form below, or contact Maria at

*This research is open to ensembles outside of the UK, Maria will travel to you if the right opportunity presents itself
