The Sapphnetic Mirror expands my Sapphnetics practice to a monumental scale. Large sheets of steel, fitted with custom electromagnetic pickups and neodymium magnets, become a playable ecosystem that responds to the smallest gesture with resonances, overtones and feedback.
The steel itself is a collaborator, resisting control and shaping the sound in unpredictable ways. Shown both as installation and as performance instrument, it moves between delicate overtones and powerful resonant feedback. Like all Sapphnetics projects it embodies a feminist approach to instrument design, in favour of intuitive, accessible and collaborative practice over traditional mastery.
Commissioned by the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and Perempuan Komponis. Premiered at Ruang Pameran Planetarium, Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta (2024), and also presented at the Fakāugesi Festival, Johannesburg.
