The Tentaculae is a sound object that enables anyone to make music with mushrooms. It offers playful, accessible ways into what I call transspecies listening: music and sound not as exclusively human endeavours, but as spaces of multi-species collaboration.
Pink, tentacle-like and inviting, it connects one tentacle to a mushroom tank and another to a computer, leaving the rest open to the public. Each carries bio-data collectors that gather skin response, heart rate or temperature, sonifying them into a shared musical experience alongside the spiking patterns of the fungi. The object was designed with the AI Chimère.
Commissioned by the AiiA festival (2022) and premiered at Théâtre Saint-Gervais, Geneva, with showings at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra Festival, the Creative Climate Awards (NYC, 2023) and the Intergalactic Space Jungle in Huddersfield.
