A concerto for large improvising ensemble, piano and electronics on a theme of Thelonious Monk harmonies and mixed tuning systems, with its chords held in suspension and a second electronic sound-world of sustained sine-tones in just intonation. I wrote it in June 2025 while working in the United States, for the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra’s first meeting with Pat Thomas. Recorded live at St Luke’s, Glasgow, on 21 June 2025, with me on electronics, it appears on Celebrating Monk (scatterArchive, 2026).

“‘Monk at the Border’ by Maria Sappho is a magical piece.” Dominic Rivron, International Times
